Around the Bend

I finished reading Michael Caine's autobiography recently and was looking over some of the films I have seen him in.  In Around the Bend, a family of men reconnect when the patriarch (Michael Caine) faces death.

Henry wants to find an unusual funeral ritual that would INVOLVE his family. Currently he lives with his grandson Jason (Josh Lucas) and great grandson Zach. Suddenly Henry's son Turner shows up (Christopher Walken), who left when Jason was a boy. Jason is wary, especially when Turner admits he's only there for a day, but Henry is delighted. The women are out of the picture, Turner's wife is dead and Jason is going through a trial separation.

To fulfill his desire for an unusual funeral rite, Henry plans a sort of treasure hunt/road trip to visit pivotal locations in his life. Surprisingly, Turner is more intent on fulfilling his dad's wishes, where Jason thinks it's all a bother. Jason of course begins finding out surprising things about his estranged father.

I like how it really did focus on the men, and didn't shoehorn some woman into the picture as a love interest. Glenne Headley costars mostly for comic relief as Henry's sexy Danish nurse. Little things, like Turner being a vegetarian and Jason doesn't like chicken, and one of the things Henry stipulates is they always have to eat at KFC, elevates the film above a typical family drama. Walken has an atypical dramatic performance and it's a nice looking film. The ending is as you would expect, but this one is not bad.
