This is the type of movie often called a "popcorn" movie--not very deep, lots of action, perhaps cheeky dialogue. Five special ops-type soldiers--Clay, Roque, Pooch, Jensen and Cougar--are
betrayed by an unseen handler Max during a mission, compromising them so they
have to go into hiding. They want revenge for this and other reasons, which is
the setup for the story.
Now that they're considered dead, they go
rogue. They can't return to the U.S. but are convinced by femme fatale Aisha
that they can help each other. She too wants revenge on Max for some reason and
can bankroll the type of weaponry and material they need. Clay, the colonel of
the group, decides yes, and the men, who are loyal to him--and what other choice
do they have now they are persona non grata--decide yes too.
There are
some double crosses and betrayals, some humor, a lot of things blowing up, as
Aisha aims to cripple Max where it hurts most. Based on a comic book, it does
have that sort of feeling, with a lot of mayhem, violence (surprisingly not too
graphic), and a plot that is not too intent on making sense but more to up the
craziness ante.
There were some minor things like when a baddie wants
to escape on a private jet but before he does so, he fights with a goodie, why
doesn't the pilot he was just threatening take off without him? Also Max's
right hand man Wade seems to go along with everything despite Max being
diabolical and having a hair trigger; I don't see what Wade gets out of
this.
Of course the men that make up the losers all have a heart of
gold. But if this is your type of film it is some mindless fun.
Stars
Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Colonel Clay, Idris Elba as Roque (the knife man, he's
second in command), Zoe Saldana as Aisha, Chris Evans as Jensen (he brings a lot
of comic relief, he's the computer expert), Columbus Short as Pooch (he's the pilot), Oscar Jaenada as Cougar (the sniper),
and Jason Patric as the maniacal Max.
