Watch it, bro!--Hermano

Last night I was able to attend a preview screening for a really great family drama. It is about two Venezuelan brothers with dreams of playing soccer.
In Hermano, Daniel, the teen brother, was a foundling baby rescued by Julio's mother, but their bond is blood. Julio, who is a few years older, is involved in a gang and drug dealing, which Daniel disapproves of and tries to steer his brother back to family and soccer. But Julio also considers the gang his "brothers."

Daniel is the better soccer player, but as a twosome they are pretty unbeatable. When scouts offer Daniel an opportunity, he sees it as a way out, but wants of course to bring Julio along with him. There are some tragedies/secrets which Daniel hides from Julio but by the end of the film you see Julio has finally realized how much Daniel has sacrificed personally to get them out of their slum. The family relationships are very real and the acting is very good.  In fact, this is Fernando Moreno's first role (as Daniel) and I think he is one to watch.  There were strong performances by the actors playing the mother, the coach, and Julio's gang brother, and they and their lives come off as very real and relatable for many struggling families.

The trailer I think shows you a bit of what the film is about--the relationship and rivalry between the brothers, the family aspect of one's circle which is voiced by their coach.  If you read Spanish here is a production blog.  The film is scheduled to be released early next year.
