Free event: Fat, Bald, Short Man

I first saw Fat, Bald, Short Man at last year's Chicago International Film Festival.  It is getting some re-screenings during the Chicago Public Library's Global Lens film series this winter.  I like the film and its depiction of a meek man emboldened to make his presence known.

Bluff

This Colombian crime comedy centers around a guy getting revenge on his boss after finding him with his girlfriend. Nicolas (Federico Lorusso) works as a photographer. We find out in a flashback that he has to freelance because he found his girlfriend Margarita (Catalina Aristizabal) and boss Mallinaro (VĂctor Mallarino) together, and Mallarino has fired Nicolas as retaliation fro his job as a tabloid photographer. Although Margarita subsequently marries Mallarino, Nicolas still wants her back.

CIFF 2011: Fat, Bald, Short Man

The title (mostly) describes the main character, middle-aged Antonio Fanfar (Alvaro Bayona), who works in a notary public's office in Colombia.  The film uses rotoscope animation to depict its characters, with muted background images.  Antonio is shy and meek, and during the course of the story, stands up for himself in small ways.
